This memorial commemorates the 9 members of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion who died during the Boer War of 1899-1902.

Staff Sergeant F C Sharples, Corporal J Monkhouse, Corporal J L Pollock, Private S Bent, Private W Carmichael, Private G Cocker, Private H Oxley, Private E J Unsworth, Private J A Winning.

The 2nd Volunteer Battalion did not fight as a unit in South Africa, but it did send a number of individuals to join Volunteer Service Companies that fought with Regular units of the Manchester Regiment.

This memorial was originally installed at the battalion's former Drill Hall on Stretford Road in Hulme.
