The sloop HMS Londonderry photographed in Lake Timsah.  This photograph was taken by Lieutenant Robert 'Rex' King-Clark from his Miles Whitney Straight aeroplane, registration G-AERS.

HMS Londonderry, a Grimsby class sloop, was commissioned in mid 1935.  She was based in the Red Sea until 1938 when she was reassigned to the South Africa Station.

During the Second World War Londonderry was sent back to the UK and served as a convoy escort ship throughout the war.  She escorted convoys across the Atlantic, and south to Sierra Leone and Gibraltar.  In 1944 she helped protect the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Londonderry survived the war.  She was placed in reserve in June 1945 and scrapped in 1948.  Her sister ship, HMS Wellington, survives in 2014, she is moored on the Thames in London.
