In mid 1937 the Manchester Regiment was selected to convert its battalions from infantry to the machine gun.  This meant reorganising the unit from sections of individual riflemen into small teams who worked together to operate the Vickers Machine Gun.

The process meant all soldiers had to be trained on the Vickers, and on driving and maintaining the many more vehicles the new organisation demanded.

Here Major Claude Webb (on the left, facing the camera)  is 'superintending' some of this training. The photograph was taken by Lieutenant Robert 'Rex' King-Clark.  As a Platoon Commander Rex would be responsible for 4 Vickers gun teams, each of 6 men.
